September 24, 2019 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Herbalife Nutrition announced a one-year partnership with the city of Fontana, California to help reduce the prevalence of obesity across the city.

Thirty nine percent of the adults living in Fontana are plagued with this chronic disease, and the partnership’s goal is to inspire people to make positive changes to their lifestyle to increase their life expectancy. Through a $25,000 donation, the company will play an integral role in the city’s health education and fitness programs and be the presenting sponsor of the Fontana Days Run Half Marathon & 5K on Saturday, June 6, 2020.

“Kicking off the Healthy Communities initiative in our backyard and promoting our mission of healthy active lifestyles through balanced nutrition and exercise, we are hopeful to make a lasting change here and beyond,” said Dr. John Agwunobi, co-president and chief health and nutrition officer, Herbalife Nutrition.

As part of the partnership, the company will share its expertise in the health and wellness area, lending its dietary experts to develop customized nutrition and fitness programs to share with the city, and engage in various events including community wellness sessions with topics ranging from how to begin developing healthier nutrition habits to incorporating daily exercise as part of one’s overall routine. Young Living Donates 11,597 Acres to Create a Conservation Easement

September 24, 2019 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Young Living Essential Oils recently announced the donation of a conservation easement covering 11,597 acres, or 18.75 square miles, to The Nature Conservancy.

According to the company, this is the largest conservation easement donation in the history of The Nature Conservancy’s Utah chapter.

The donated property, located in the Uinta Mountain foothills near Tabiona in Duchesne County, plays a pivotal ecological role to native wildlife. The land serves as a migratory corridor nicknamed the “Utah Serengeti,” due to the large herds of elk and deer migrating between their summer and winter ranges there. The easement includes seven miles of the Duchesne River, two mountain ranges and sage brush habitat that provides a haven for endangered greater sage-grouse. The donation will also ensure the preservation of ancient Native American petroglyphs carved by the ancestors of the Ute tribes.

Jared Turner, president and COO of Young Living Essential Oils, shared that the land held special significance to Young Living Founder D. Gary Young, who named it the River Ranch. “Gary grew up in the mountainous wilderness of Idaho,” Turner said. “He always loved spending time with family and friends on mountain adventures. Preserving this beautiful part of Utah is a legacy grounded in that passion. Gary and I both shared a deep love of nature and wild places, which is why Young Living is committed to preserving and protecting vital habitat for wildlife, as well as for current and future generations to enjoy. We are grateful to The Nature Conservancy for working with us to protect this special place. We also appreciate the support we received from the citizens of Tabiona, Hanna and other surrounding communities.”

“We are deeply grateful for the generosity and conservation vision inspired by D. Gary Young and made possible by Young Living Essential Oils,” said David Livermore, Utah State Director for The Nature Conservancy. “This large easement will preserve key lands and contribute to the overall health and function of the watershed. We are thrilled to partner with Young Living Essential Oils to ensure that this land remains viable for wildlife and future generations.”

In Gary Young’s honor, Young Living will dedicate the property as the D. Gary Young Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is one of several commitments Young Living has made to honor its founder’s legacy and its ongoing commitment to sustainability.

September 23, 2019 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Rodan + Fields recently announced it is launching in Japan in 2020.

The launch will be the dermatology-inspired skincare company’s first step in expanding into the Asian market, one of the fastest-growing markets globally for the beauty and personal care industry. Rodan + Fields will enter Japan with new product formulations designed exclusively for the Japanese market.

“We are looking forward to the opportunity to enter this important market and bring our innovative, regimen-based skincare brand and business proposition to Japan,” said Diane Dietz, president and chief executive officer. “Our brand heritage resides in giving women life changing skincare through the highest quality products and it makes Japan a natural next step as we expand Rodan + Fields’ global footprint.”

Practicing dermatologists and successful entrepreneurs Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields founded Rodan + Fields with the mission of offering consumers the best skin of their lives through a forward-thinking Consumer-Connected Commerce business model and powerful Consultant Community. They have a deep appreciation for the attention women in Japan pay to skincare regimens and the in-depth understanding of the importance of a healthy skincare routine.

Rodan + Fields’ team of scientists and innovators spent five years developing skincare regimens and formulas tailored specifically for Japan. These prestige formulas have undergone clinical testing in Japan to ensure their efficacy for this market.

“As dermatologists, we understand the universal importance of healthy, beautiful skin and believe our innovative solutions made specifically for this market are a strong fit for Japan, one of the world’s most sophisticated skincare markets,” said Dr.  Rodan.

“After five years of intensive research and product testing in Japan, we are bringing life-changing skincare and the confidence it inspires to the discerning Japanese market,” said Dr.  Fields.

In keeping with the company’s commitment to Do Good in the communities it serves, Rodan + Fields also announced that the company’s Prescription for Change Foundation, a non-profit organization funded through voluntary contributions by Rodan + Fields Independent Consultants, customers and the company, is partnering with Kids’ Door. Kids’ Door is dedicated to helping young people in Japan succeed in school and in life. This effort will expand Kids’ Door programs to reach 3,000 more high school students with educational assistance, counseling and basic nutrition to help them graduate from high school and enter university. It will also help those who have dropped out of school to achieve a high school equivalency and find employment. The grant will target young people living in Adachi ward, an underserved neighborhood in Tokyo. Before Rodan + Fields even sold its first product, the Prescription for Change Foundation made its first grant to support young people in the U.S., starting a journey that today has reached and touched the lives of more than 1.3 million youth.

“Our purpose to Do Good is in our DNA—it started with the inception of our brand and continues to be an integral element of how we launch in new markets,” said Dietz. “We have found the perfect partner in Japan with Kids’ Door and look forward to helping empower youth in this new market.”

Mary Kay Launches Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator

September 23, 2019 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Mary Kay Inc., a leading advocate of women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship, today announced the Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator.

The initiative is a strategic collaboration developed in consultation with six United Nations agencies: UN Women, United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP), International Labour Organization (ILO), International Trade Centre (ITC), UN Global Compact (UNGC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The multi-partner initiative is designed to inspire, educate and empower women entrepreneurs around the world.

The Accelerator will offer a guided digital curriculum supplemented by on-the-ground training and mentorship. In addition, it will serve as an advocacy platform to eliminate entrepreneurial roadblocks for women, ranging from digital literacy to legal reform, enabling women to fully participate in the growth of their local and national economies. The Accelerator will support global efforts to encourage businesses to establish and expand relationships with women-owned businesses, including corporate procurement. Future expansion of the program will include funding opportunities accessible to women who complete the curriculum.

“Mary Kay has empowered women through entrepreneurship and supported their aspirations for financial security and independence for more than 56 years,” said Deborah Gibbins, chief operating officer of Mary Kay. “Private and public-sector organizations must work together to ensure all women entrepreneurs have access to the tools and education they need to make their dreams of financial independence a reality, lifting up their families and communities.”

The Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator initially will be available in six languages, with more to come as the program expands to 192 countries. The Accelerator also will convene an advisory committee of entrepreneurs, celebrities and advocates to oversee the expansion and promotion of the program.

“An informed woman with money in her pocket is an empowered woman,” said Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of UN Women. “With the growing number of female innovators active today, women’s entrepreneurship and empowerment are strongly on the rise. The advocates from across the world who are joining forces to create the Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator will enable more women than ever to become knowledgeable entrepreneurs, cultivate financial independence, and support their local communities.”

“At ITC we look forward to joining the Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator through our SheTrades Initiative to achieve real progress on achieving SDG5 to empower all women and girls,” said Arancha González, executive director of the International Trade Centre. “With this partnership we will empower women and girls to pursue their entrepreneurship dreams, and equip them with the skills needed to turn those dreams into business success.”

The Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator is the latest in a series of recent steps taken by Mary Kay to empower women and improve their lives around the world. Earlier this year, Mary Kay added its name to a growing roster of businesses and corporations committing to the Women’s Empowerment Principles, a joint project of the UN Global Compact and UN Women developed to emphasize the business case for corporate action to promote gender equality. Mary Kay is also a signatory of the UN Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. During the United Nations General Assembly, Mary Kay will sponsor the WE Empower UN SDG Challenge, the first global business competition for women entrepreneurs convened by renowned fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

Direct Sellers Urge Lawmakers to Protect and Clarify Independent Contractor Status

September 23, 2019 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

The Direct Selling Association (DSA) hosted its annual Direct Selling Day on Capitol Hill for executives and independent direct sellers throughout the United States.

More than 125 people representing 19 DSA member companies met with members of Congress to emphasize the importance of protecting independent workers and to discuss how direct selling offers a flexible and low-risk pathway to entrepreneurship for millions of Americans.

Direct Selling Day on Capitol Hill is part of the DSA’s broader efforts to urge passage of H.R. 3522, the Preserving the Direct Seller Independence Act, which is intended to modernize independent work laws to keep pace with updates in the economy and with the nature of labor.

“As we see more people choosing independent work in today’s economy, it’s important that we recognize that all independent work is not the same,” said Joseph N. Mariano, DSA president and chief executive officer. “Choice is a critical distinction to make, and H.R. 3522 preserves direct sellers’ ability to choose the products they want to sell, the customers they engage with, and the hours they will work—and make those decisions based on their own needs, responsibilities and aspirations.”

Direct sellers participating in the Capitol Hill events represent the more than 6 million entrepreneurs—about 75 percent of whom are women—in the United States. According to 2019 DSA National Salesforce Study, “flexibility” was the top reason for becoming a direct seller.

“Direct selling is a force for good, and we make a positive difference in the lives of so many across the U.S. and beyond,” explained Ryan Napierski, DSA chairman and president of Nu Skin Enterprises. “It is important for us to ensure that our representatives here in Washington, D.C. understand what we do and what makes direct selling different from newer gig economy players. The importance of the work we are doing today cannot be understated.”

Attendees urged almost 100 members of Congress to consider the implications and importance of maintaining the independent contractor status for all direct sellers. During the morning program, attendees heard from members of the Direct Selling Caucus about their support of the direct selling business. Speakers were Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC), Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) and Rep Tim Walberg (R-MI).

“As the son of an entrepreneur, I understand what it takes to build a business on your own terms,” explained Rep. Gottheimer. “As co-author of H.R. 3522, the Preserving Direct Seller Independence Act, I believe direct selling and the good that it does universally for American families is something that all legislators, regardless of politics and party affiliation, can stand behind.”

DSA continues to work with members of Congress as a part of ongoing efforts to police, protect and promote direct selling, and to ensure direct sellers are fully understood at all levels of government.

Congressman Barr Visits Scentsy’s Kentucky Facility

September 20, 2019 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (R-KY) recently met with employees of Direct Selling Association (DSA) member Scentsy at its warehouse facility in his hometown of Lexington, Ky.

Rep. Barr toured the warehouse and observed as 200 employees picked, kitted and packed products for delivery to more than 108,000 Scentsy Consultants across the United States.

“I enjoyed getting an opportunity to visit with employees at Scentsy’s Lexington facility, and I appreciate the company’s willingness to provide job opportunities for hundreds of constituents in my hometown of Lexington,” said Rep. Barr. “Scentsy’s recognition of the city as a critical logistical hub in the United States makes them a valued member of our community. I look forward to watching Scentsy grow and prosper in Kentucky for years to come.”

Scentsy chose the Lexington location for its distribution warehouse based on its proximity to two-thirds of the U.S. population to which it serves.

“Sharing our warehouse facility with Congressman Barr provided our team with the opportunity to connect in-person with their elected official and discuss issues that are of everyday concern to them,” said Mark Stastny, chief marketing officer for Scentsy and member of the DSA Board Directors. “It’s exciting to see Congressman like Rep. Barr continuing to be involved on a local level in his hometown.”

The Direct Selling Association, the national trade organization for the direct selling industry, works with member companies like Scentsy and executive leaders such as Stastny to identify opportunities to meet their elected officials.

DSA Seeks Clarity from FDA on CBD Products

September 19, 2019 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

The Direct Selling Association (DSA) has sent a memo to member companies stating that clarity is needed from the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on the sale of cannabinoid (CBD) products.

The clarification concerns the FDA’s statement after passage of the 2018 Farm Bill that while the farming of hemp is legal, the use of CBD—an active ingredient in cannabis derived from hemp—in foods or dietary supplements (ingestible) is unlawful.FDA on CBD Products

On July 30, the Code Administer of the DSA sent a memo stating that the sale of ingestible CBD products would violative of the DSA Code of Ethics. DSA then instituted a 90-day window for member companies selling CBD products during which they would not be cited for Code of Ethics violations, and to account for additional time to permit the FDA to make a determination.

DSA is urging the FDA to “timely explore a pathway” to allow CBD to become available.

Pampered Chef CEO Tracy Britt Cool Steps Down

September 19, 2019 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Pampered Chef, a Berkshire Hathaway Company, announced that Chief Executive Officer Tracy Britt Cool plans to step down from her roles at Berkshire Hathaway and Pampered Chef.

To support a smooth transition, Britt Cool will remain with the company until March 2020, when Andrew Treanor, Pampered Chef’s chief operating officer, will become CEO.

Britt Cool has been with Berkshire Hathaway for 10 years. In addition to serving as CEO of Pampered Chef for the last five years, she has held a variety of roles, including financial assistant to the chairman, board member of Kraft Heinz, and chairman of several Berkshire Hathaway companies.

“While it has been a difficult decision to leave such an amazing and well-respected company, it has been an honor and a privilege to work with Warren Buffett, as well as many accomplished colleagues,” Britt Cool shared. “I’m proud of my time at Berkshire Hathaway and am grateful to have helped grow several Berkshire companies, including Pampered Chef. Our team has transformed Pampered Chef into a vibrant company that is growing, innovating and enriching lives. I’m confident Andrew is the right leader to continue to drive our growth and success.”

Over the last five years, Pampered Chef focused on rebuilding the foundation of the business and creating new engines for growth through a renewed focus on the independent consultant base, a refreshed brand, enhanced product innovation, expanded international footprint and significant digital channel growth. Following more than a decade of decline, the company has meaningfully grown sales and earnings over the last five years. It has grown into a strong and diverse business with more than 50 percent of Pampered Chef’s business now coming from digital sales, up from approximately 10 percent in 2014.

Warren E. Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, stated: “Five years ago I asked Tracy to redirect and re-energize Pampered Chef. Direct selling was encountering new challenges and Pampered Chef’s sales and earnings had been declining. Under Tracy’s leadership, major financial gains have been achieved. Even more important, our corps of consultants is rapidly growing and prospering. Tracy is handing Andrew a company infused with excitement and momentum.”

After leaving Berkshire Hathaway, Britt Cool plans to launch a new long-term platform to acquire and build businesses. She will use her experience from Berkshire Hathaway as a value investor and an entrepreneurial-minded operator to focus on buying and growing companies that are smaller than Berkshire Hathaway’s size threshold for acquisitions.

“As a founder, I couldn’t have asked for a better leader and partner in rebuilding Pampered Chef than Tracy,” said Doris Christopher, founder and chairman of Pampered Chef. “She has played a critical role leading the company’s transformation and building a strong team to continue our growth. I’m confident in Andrew’s leadership and Pampered Chef’s growth, and I’m excited for what Tracy will do next. I know she will be successful in building even more companies and will be a strong partner to founders, entrepreneurs and management teams.”

Mary Kay Reveals Breakthrough Anti-Gravity Findings

September 18, 2019 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Mary Kay Inc. recently shared its latest research targeting the causes and underlying mechanisms of slackened skin.

The research was presented at the 49th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR) held on September 18–21 in Bordeaux, France.

According to the research, the appearance of slackened, sagging skin tends to become prevalent in the fourth or fifth decade of life regardless of lifestyle or environmental exposure. The constant effect of gravity over time contributes to the emergence of prominent nasolabial folds and sagging skin along the jawline and neck.

“As sagging skin is a consumer concern, we developed a treatment product specifically targeted to lift sagging skin,” said Dr. Lucy Gildea, chief scientific officer at Mary Kay Inc. “Our scientists tested hundreds of materials on human skin cells to identify the most effective combination of ingredients that help promote natural hyaluronic acid and collagen, the two factors that are reduced in slackened skin. A unique peptide and meristem cells from the Centella asiatica plant stood out in terms of efficacy. That’s why we selected them for use in a cosmetic serum. The serum efficacy has been verified in our labs and by women themselves on their skin in clinical tests. This is the science behind our TimeWise Repair® Volu-Firm® Lifting Serum.”

Led by Dr. Gildea, Mary Kay’s Research and Development team comprises distinguished scientists holding doctorates and other advanced degrees across multiple disciplines: skin biology, cell biology, chemistry, biochemistry and more. Mary Kay holds more than 1,500 patents for products, technologies, and packaging designs in its global portfolio. Last year, the company opened a more than $100 million state-of-the-art manufacturing and R&D facility in Lewisville, Texas.
