MONAT Raises $248,000 to Support At-Risk Youth

May 13, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

MONAT Global Corp and its philanthropic movement MONAT Gratitude raised $248,000 to support non-profit organizations that empower at-risk youth through education, scholarships and mentoring programs.

The money was raised through sales of MONAT’s limited-edition Helping Hand Gift Set, which were sold in January and February of this year—100 percent of the net profits from the sets were donated.

“Gratitude is part of who we are, so we wanted to start the year off by giving a helping hand,” said Lu Urdaneta, chief culture officer, MONAT Global. “Right now, it’s more important than ever that we come together and help those who need it most. All of the benefiting organizations are fully supporting their communities, and we are proud to make these donations, which were made possible by our Market Partners and customers.”

MONAT’s donation will benefit the following organizations:

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of America
  • Horizons for Youth
  • Chance UK
  • SOS Wioski Dziecięce
  • Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC)

“We are grateful for the support of MONAT Global, especially during these trying times,” said Pam Lorio, CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters America. “Despite the challenge of social distancing, our Big Brothers Big Sisters staff members across the country are finding ways to keep Bigs and Littles connected while helping families find resources in their time of need.  We appreciate the investment MONAT Global is making to ensure our mentoring programs continue long after this crisis ends.”

“It’s encouraging for us to know there are other people out there that are passionate about the cause like we are,” said Dwight Miller, operations manager, Horizons for Youth Canada. “This age group seems to be a bit of a forgotten population, and what they are looking for most is love and care. To know that we have organizations like MONAT that care enough to donate to a small place like Horizons for Youth is unbelievable.”

Stuart Johnson Launches Transformation Capital, LLC

May 11, 2020 by R. Todd Eliason Leave a Comment

Stuart Johnson, Founder and CEO of SUCCESS Partners has launched a new venture, Transformation Capital, LLC, a boutique investment banking and business development firm with a primary industry focus on the direct selling vertical, as well as ancillary businesses.

“This business combines 35 years of experience in the direct selling space, as well as the extensive relationships I have been fortunate enough to build, with the financial, M&A and capital raising experience and expertise of my partner, Ryan Bright,” says Johnson. “I have known Ryan for more than 20 years and he possesses a wide breadth of financial industry experience, across both public and private equities, including investment banking, private equity, hedge funds and investor relations.”

Transformation Capital’s services include:

  • Buy side and sell side M&A advisory
  • Equity & debt financing
  • Proprietary transactions
  • Joint venture & partnership opportunities
  • Institutional advisory

Both Johnson and Bright and have long believed that small and mid-market companies within our industry have been traditionally underserved and underappreciated within the financial community as we are often mis-understood and mis-categorized. “There is a gap evident that we can hopefully bridge,” says Johnson. “We know this industry, we know your businesses.”

“From a financial markets and investment perspective, firms are actively looking for opportunities that can generate positive returns in an environment that precludes a large number of industries from operating profitably.” – Stuart Johnson

Some might view this as an inopportune time to launch a new financial business, however, Johnson believes it to be the exact opposite.  “Our ability to provide home based income opportunities in conjunction with valuable products and services is timely and seminal as our country, and the world as a whole, work to adjust to a new normal, at least for the foreseeable future,” Johnson adds. “From a financial markets and investment perspective, firms are actively looking for opportunities that can generate positive returns in an environment that precludes a large number of industries from operating profitably.”

DSA Hosts Virtual Town Hall with Congressmen John Curtis, Ben McAdams

May 11, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

The Direct Selling Association (DSA) hosted U.S. Representatives John Curtis (R-UT) and Ben McAdams (D-UT) for a virtual town hall with Utah direct sellers.

Held on May 1, the event was moderated by DSA President Joseph N. Mariano. Opening remarks were offered by Ryan Napierski, DSA chairman of the Board and president of Nu Skin Enterprises.

Senior executives from Utah direct selling companies also provided comments and heard from their elected representatives. The Congressmen offered perspective that the wills of our industry could move forward with us and were enlightened to hear that we are adapting to the crisis by shifting to online activity.

“I have been a champion of direct selling my entire life in public service,” said Representative Curtis. “The town hall provided a great forum for me to provide an update from Washington on how the policies are impacting an industry that has such a profound impact on my constituents. It was great to hear how these businesses are evolving during the crisis.”

Representative McAdams said, “As the member of the United States House of Representatives with many direct sellers in my district, it’s always great to hear from these great businesses. I appreciate everything they are doing in their communities to help during the crisis. Learning about their successes and challenges makes me a better representative for them in Washington.”

“The perspectives offered by these two great Members of Congress who represent such a large portion of direct selling in the United States was extremely informative,” said DSA President Joseph N. Mariano. “We appreciate their continuing support and know they will fight for policies on Capitol Hill that will have beneficial impacts to direct sellers and their communities.”

Building and maintaining relationships with members of Congress remains an essential mission for DSA and its members, especially during this challenging time.

Natural Health Trends Down 23% in Q1 2020

May 11, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Natural Health Trends Corp. (NASDAQ: NHTC), a direct-selling company that markets products under the NHT Global brand, announced its financial results for Q1 2020.

For the quarter ended March 31, 2020, revenue was $14.9 million, a decrease of 23 percent compared to $19.3 million in the first quarter of 2019.

“I am pleased that we have continued to run our operations efficiently with the health and safety of our employees, members and customers guiding our decisions as our top priority,” said Chris Sharng, president of Natural Health Trends Corp. “The impact of the pandemic followed the already difficult operating conditions we experienced throughout 2019.

Sharng said that, while the company could have never foreseen the impact COVID-19 would have on the global economy, it focused its efforts in 2019 on preparing the business to adapt to new realities following China’s 100-day campaign and have been applying key learnings from its experience to support affected markets. According to Sharng, the company started implementing aggressive cost reduction measures beginning in the second half of 2019, which were partially offset by additional spending during the first quarter in direct response to COVID-19 and the governments’ measures to control the spread of the virus. As a result of the net effect of these actions, NHTC narrowed the scope of its first quarter operating loss and decline in cash flow from operations despite the fact that its main markets were under severe lockdown for most of first quarter of 2020.

Natura &Co Reports Q1 Revenue for Natura Brand Up; Avon Down

May 8, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Natura &Co reported revenue growth in the first quarter of 2020, the first to include Avon Products, Inc.

Natura &Co’s consolidated net revenue reached R$7.5 billion, up 1.9 percent versus the same quarter last year. According to the company, growth was driven by a strong increase in sales by the Natura brand in Brazil and in Hispanic Latin America and continued double-digit growth at Aesop.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, digital social selling and e-commerce sales grew exponentially as consumers adapted to social distancing and lockdown measures by mid-March. Group e-commerce sales grew by nearly 250 percent in recent weeks vs. the same period last year. During the quarter, e-commerce grew 150 percent at Natura and Avon combined, 300 percent at the Body Shop and over 500 percent at Aesop.

The Natura brand’s net revenue increased by 14.9 percent, supported by strong sales growth at Natura Brazil (+9.8%) and Hispanic Latam (+25.8%,) despite Covid-19 impacts toward the end of the quarter. The Avon brand’s net revenue declined 7.1 percent in BRL on a reduction in representatives across all markets in Latin America and Covid-19 impact later in the quarter, partially offset by an improved price/mix combination.

Avon International, which comprises Avon’s activities in 50 markets throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, saw its Q1 net revenue decrease by 2.4% in BRL. The decrease was caused by a reduction in representatives and a Covid-19 impact, partially offset by an improved price/mix combination across most markets. Representatives increased adoption of digital assets from a low single digit in 2019 to over 37 percent in recent weeks. Sales via the digital brochure have increased nearly 85 percent since January 1.

With the addition of Avon, Natura &Co becomes the leader in the Latin American CFT market with 11.8 percent market share (source: Euromonitor). Natura &Co has accelerated Avon’s integration and is raising its target synergies by $100 million to between $300 million and $400 million, including new top-line synergies to be achieved over four years at Natura &Co Latam.

Nu Skin Revenue Down 17% in Q1 2020

May 7, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: NUS) announced first-quarter 2020 revenue results of $518.0 million, compared to $623.6 million in Q1 2019. The number of sales leaders was 49,551, down 22 percent from 63,248 in Q1 2019.

“The efforts and resiliency of our sales leaders and global teams helped us achieve revenue and earnings above guidance in the first quarter,” said Ritch Wood, chief executive officer. “While COVID-19 continues to present significant challenges globally, we are grateful for the heroic efforts of healthcare workers, first responders and other essential workers around the world. From a Nu Skin perspective, our entire organization has mobilized to protect the health and safety of our teams and ensure business continuity for our customers. As a result, we have been able to maintain support for our sales leaders, leverage our supply chain to meet consumer demand for our products and utilize technology to facilitate remote work for both our sales leaders and employees.”

Wood noted that more than 80 percent of their revenue comes through our digital properties which have been enhanced by strategic investments in technology infrastructure and digital tools. Additionally, their manufacturing and supply chain investments have enabled them to effectively manage inventory and fulfill customer orders worldwide through very challenging circumstances.

“While there is a great deal of uncertainty in the broader economy, we are optimistic our business will perform well as sales leaders leverage our technology investments to drive product demand and interest in the business opportunity,” said Wood. “The situation in Mainland China is stabilizing with the country returning to work, a key development we believe will translate into improvement throughout the year. We anticipate similar trends in most of our other markets as pandemic restrictions begin to ease elsewhere across the globe. We continue to believe this trend, paired with the global preview of our newest beauty device late in 2020, sets our business up for a return to growth toward the end of the year,” Wood concluded.
