PM-International Offering Free Shipping on End Customers Orders

May 21, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

To support distribution partners during the coronavirus pandemic, PM-International is currently offering free shipping for end customer orders.

The offer is valid worldwide for all orders over €50.

PM-International is positioned worldwide as an online business. PM-International Team Partners can consult their customers via video conference from home and place orders online. These are handled entirely by PM-International within its Customer Direct Program. The company has been offering free shipping for end customers since April. Initially, the offer is valid until the end of this month.

Rolf Sorg, CEO and founder of PM-International, sees the free shipping offer as an investment in distribution partners: “It’s our responsibility towards our Team Partners to offer flexible solutions. During the past weeks, customer support via direct contact was not possible in many countries. Our Customer Direct Program with free shipping offers an alternative which allows our Team Partners to run their business securely from home, without restrictions.”

In Italy, one of the countries most affected by the coronavirus pandemic, PM-International sent out more than 8,000 end customer deliveries in April. This corresponds to a 340 percent increase compared to the previous month.

Mary Kay Inc. Continues Its Support of Women’s Empowerment

May 20, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Mary Kay Inc. continues its support of female entrepreneurship, empowerment and thought leadership as a premier sponsor for the 2020 International Women’s Forum (IWF) Virtual Cornerstone Conference.

Originally scheduled to take place May 13-15 in London, the conference has shifted to a digital format due to the COVID-19 pandemic; much of the same content and speakers will be broadcast globally in a series of virtual sessions shared weekly at https://www.iwforum.org/.

On May 21, Mary Kay will participate in a virtual session entitled “A Conversation with TIME’S UP UK” discussing important issues such as #MeToo and how the ensuing TIME’S UP movement has led to re-thinking women’s safety on film and television sets, as well as other industries around the world. Carolyn Passey, general manager of Mary Kay UK and Ireland, will open the session focusing on changes TIME’S UP UK is seeking to implement, navigating the line between personal and professional, and aiding those who frequently find themselves vulnerable and exploited while filming.

“At Mary Kay, we advocate for women’s empowerment and gender equality and we partner with organizations whose mission is to do the same,” said Passey. “Today, as the COVID-19 crisis is exacerbating women’s vulnerabilities and gender inequality, we know trust and safety are more critical than ever for women to thrive. The workplace should be a safe and dignified place for all of us. How can we ensure—and demand—this happens? I look forward to the discussion on the topic with thought leaders from around the world.”

Speakers at the session include:

  • Dame Heather Rabbatts, TIME’S UP UK Chair Managing Director of Cove Pictures; Chair of Soho Theatre and non-executive board member for Arts Alliance.
  • Ita O’Brien, the UK’s leading Intimacy Coordinator and founder of Intimacy on Set, her company through which she has been developing best practices regarding intimacy and nudity in film, television and theatre and through which she trains Intimacy Coordinators all over the world.

“Now, more than ever, it is crucial to continue the conversation around safe and equal working conditions for women within the entertainment industry and beyond,” said Stephanie O’Keefe, CEO of IWF. “As the world develops a new way to work in the context of COVID-19, I am hopeful that there will be strategies in place to ensure women can re-enter the physical workplace with confidence they will be safe and treated equally. Mary Kay is a long-time supporter of gender equality, and we are thrilled to continue this fight with them to ensure a more gender-equal world.”

A link to watch the event will be available on the IWF website and its YouTube page on May 26.

Twitter, Square Announce Work from Home Forever Option – What Are the Risks?

May 19, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

(This article was written by Dana Brownlee and appeared on Forbes.com.)

Considering benefits like reduced commute times, lower pollution levels, reduced operational costs, and increased morale….a permanent work from home business model sounds like the ultimate win-win-win-win, right? Well, not so fast. There’s a world of difference between making something work temporarily because you have to and choosing it as your permanent environment.

Recent announcements that virtually all Twitter and Square employees will have the option to work from home forever sent shock waves through business communities already grappling with the difficult decision of how and when to reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic. On the heels of surprisingly successful work from home experiences, survey data clearly suggest a momentum towards expanded work from home policies going forward. The obvious longer-term policy question for many organizations is how much working from home and for how long? Google and Facebook have announced plans to permit employees to work from home through the end of 2020.

Corporate leaders who find themselves both reveling in the short-term success of forced virtual working while also desperately seeking to reduce operational expenses may be tempted to swing the organizational design pendulum to the extreme and sign up for a near ubiquitous remote working business model. While remote working can absolutely be part of an effective, contemporary organizational design, moving to widespread, long term remote working could in fact be a grave mistake for many. There’s been so much celebration of the benefits of virtual working, that we have possibly neglected to soberly consider the risks as well. Let’s examine just a few of the very real risks.

Team Culture and Cohesion Atrophy

Obviously one of the biggest challenges for remote teams is the uphill battle to build and maintain a sense of team cohesion and camaraderie. Yes, there are best practices that teams can use to help compensate for the lack of face time in the short term, but trying to build or sustain a real sense of team without physical proximity may be like dating someone from another country that you meet online. Yes, it’s possible to cultivate true intimacy but difficult at best. When I worked as a management consultant for a large Fortune 100 IT firm with a projectized business model, I spent months on end physically working with a designated project team at an out of town client location. I absolutely felt more bonded with my in-person project team at the client location than my official team “on paper” back at headquarters. We bonded over shared inside jokes emanating from meetings that went awry, casual conversations over lunch and late nights spent hammering out deliverables in the office. That type of bonding simply isn’t on the menu in a 100% remote model. It’s also important to remember that working remotely with a team that’s been intact for some time is completely different than starting a team from scratch or even onboarding new team members remotely.

Collaboration Challenges and Productivity Loss

An obvious consequence of physical distance and less frequent contact is the fact that collaboration becomes harder. It just does. Yes, it can happen, but it requires conscious, persistent effort. Instead of just popping into Laura’s office to clarify an oddly worded email, the situation can easily degenerate into a protracted game of email volleyball or worse yet, unwittingly create strained relationships. Another important issue to consider is that for some who might already feel disadvantaged in the workplace (e.g. women, minorities, younger staff, introverts), they may face additional challenges being heard and valued virtually. The New York Times explored this phenomenon in the article “It’s Not Just You: In Online Meetings, Many Women Can’t Get a Word In.”  Furthermore, face time can be absolutely critical for many of these same communities as they seek to expand their networks and gain access to power. Admittedly, there are certainly roles in most organizations that tend to be more insular, less collaboration dependent where employees can in fact be more productive working from home – writing, sales, social media, developers, etc.—but it’s a mistake to assume that those productivity benefits translate across the board to everyone.

Diminished Customer Service Perceptions

Just as most leading ecommerce companies offer several customer service options—chat, email, phone—to offer options to suit customers’ range of preferences, there will be certain customers or even industry segments where in person interaction is expected as part of the service value. For those companies who choose to eliminate this option, they may create a competitive disadvantage if their competitors do not. Clearly, social media companies like Twitter and Facebook may not face these customer expectations, but for others, they should not just consider the potential impact (of moving completely virtual) on their workforce but also contemplate the ripple effect for their customers, partners, suppliers and other stakeholders. Just because employees may now expect to work from home doesn’t mean that a company’s other key stakeholders will necessarily buy into the new model long term.

Information Security Risk

Clearly, individual homes are uncontrolled, unsecure environments; therefore, permitting employees to work outside a controlled environment can expose the organization to significant long-term risks. Collaboration software company Wrike conducted an April 2020 Remote Work Security Survey of 1,002 workers that found that nearly 1 in 5 indicated that they’d not received any company guidelines for working securely while working remote. Meanwhile, about 41% of workers said they still use personal applications to transmit confidential files on at least a weekly basis.

Accountability and Other Performance Management Challenges

Let’s not ignore the elephant in the room….accountability. The truth is that for those amazing, high work ethic, ridiculously responsible employees, they will find a way to be successful wherever they work and accountability won’t be an issue. On the other hand, for those managers struggling with “problem children” employees, the last thing they probably want to read is a corporate announcement that employees now have the option to work home…forever. Admittedly, there are some employees who will be problematic wherever they work, but providing the license to work from home can certainly make a bad situation worse. Other employees may not necessarily be problem children – they may want to perform well and be somewhat competent but just not perform well outside the confines of a more controlled environment. They may opt for the more commute friendly option to work from home with the best of intentions, but then suffer developmentally because they don’t have the in-person support system they may need to not just produce but also to grow and mature professionally.

Loneliness and Longer-Term Mental Health Impacts

For many, while they love the convenience of working from home, it can certainly be a bit maddening to spend nearly 24×7 at home, pandemic notwithstanding. I remember that in my 20s when I lived alone and worked from home, I noticed that I started going to the grocery store a lot more. Since I really didn’t enjoy cooking or grocery shopping, I found it really odd and thought about it one day. To my shock I concluded that I was really going for social interaction. For people who live alone (and everyone else for that matter), work provides more than work. It’s a part of their lifestyle and social network and completely upending that can bring negative consequences for some. The New Yorker article “The History of Loneliness” examines this issue in part by posing the question, “In the age of quarantine, does one disease produce another?”

It goes without saying that as companies grapple with these difficult decisions, safety and public health guidance should continue to drive decision making. Remote working can indeed be an amazing alternative when in person interaction is not feasible (or advisable), and in many organizations teleworking should be adopted more broadly. However, I would argue that its implementation is most effectively determined on a case by case or even business model by business model basis. What works for a small, Silicon Valley startup may not work well for a larger more traditional non tech company. Without a doubt, one of the benefits of this forced experiment is the realization of the significant benefits of remote working, learning, etc. but the thought of simply using this limited experience as justification for flipping the switch to upend one’s business model is a scary one. Arguably, one of the worst things for the viability of work from home initiatives in the long term would be ill advised, impulsive leaps towards ubiquitous adoption in the short term. Remote working can be a powerful tool when considered carefully and implemented strategically. The key is using the scalpel approach to organizational redesign, not the chainsaw.

Young Living Employees to Work from Home Through End of 2020

May 18, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Young Living today announced employees at the company’s U.S. headquarters will continue working from home through at least the end of this year.

The announcement comes out of an abundance of caution as the company continues its efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 1,200 employees at Young Living’s headquarters in Lehi, Utah, have been working from home since March 13, when the company undertook the process of implementing a remote work strategy in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the company has seen increases in employee productivity and happiness as workers adjust to their new, more flexible working environments. Notably, the IT department has seen a 25 percent productivity increase in productivity while the sales department has seen a 13 percent increase.

The company also estimates that by allowing 95 percent of the global headquarters’ workforce to continue working from home, they will eliminate 20,175 pounds of carbon emissions per day.* Extending working from home through the end of the year, they could potentially eliminate over 3 million pounds of carbon emissions, or the amount of carbon sequestered by 64,700 mature trees.

“Prior to the current crisis, I didn’t believe in working from home on a regular basis,” said Jared Turner, president and COO of Young Living. “But seeing the positive impact the additional flexibility has had on our employees, their families and the environment has given me a new perspective. I now believe Young Living can be even more successful and innovative as a work from home company.”

Young Living’s U.S. remote employees will continue to work from home until the end of 2020 to help reduce building traffic. Employees who are working on-site will continue to work under enhanced safety measures and practice social distancing. The company continues to evaluate the dynamic COVID-19 situation regularly and is committed to ensuring the health and safety of all employees as well as of the wider community.

Turner penned an opinion piece in the Salt Lake Tribune that further explains Young Living’s work from home extension:

“…after weeks of observing my company working remotely, I am proud to say I’m a working-from-home convert, and I’ll be pushing to keep more employees at home moving forward. Young Living has seen productivity increases across the board, from 25% in IT teams to 13% in sales teams. My employees exhibit the same proactiveness and creativity they always have; they’re just doing it at a distance (and in boxers). They don’t take naps during meetings or spend their days playing video games — they’re engaged, available and building business value.

*(Based on a 30-mile round trip commute estimate using the Utah Travelwise Emissions calculator.)

May 15, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

The Direct Selling Education Foundation (DSEF) has announced its 2020 Sales Doctoral Student Grant Program recipients.

Molly Ahearne from the University of Georgia and Scott Hachey from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa were each awarded grants that will help Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)-accredited doctoral granting institutions build, recruit and retain the next generation of aspiring sales-focused faculty and scholars. Ahearne is working with Dr. John Hulland and Hachey is working with Dr. Nathan Hartmann.

“All of us at DSEF congratulate Molly and Scott,” said DSEF Executive Director Gary Huggins. “We recognize the impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on sales programs across the country and the disruption on education broadly. We are pleased to award doctoral sales grants for a second year running.”

Dr. Fernando Jaramillo, professor and associate dean for Students and Programs, University of Texas at Arlington, and Dr. Greg W. Marshall, Charles Harwood Professor of Marketing and Strategy, Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College, administered the grant program, along with Huggins and DSEF Senior Director of Academic Initiatives, Kimberly Harris Bliton.

Over a four-year period, the recipients will receive $4,000 to develop and execute a research project focusing on a topic of relevance for DSEF and DSA member companies.

We Will All Get Through This Together

May 14, 2020 by R. Todd Eliason Leave a Comment

First off, I wanted to thank all those that tuned in to our special broadcast of the 11th annual DSN Global 100 Celebration last month. Although we had to cancel the live event because of the coronavirus pandemic, we felt it necessary and relevant to continue to celebrate the very best of direct selling. A complete wrap up will be in next month’s issue regarding the companies who made up the list as well as many data points that will be useful going forward.

We are at a unique moment in time, one that will undoubtedly change the way we live and the way we do business in the future. We are mindful of the challenges you face in your daily lives.  Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, your employees, your distributors and your families.

This month’s cover story shares some examples of how four direct selling companies are innovating how they do business and propelling themselves forward in a market in which we’re sharing space with several formidable gig economy and e-commerce giants.

There is no doubt this crisis will leave a lasting mark on every industry. Our adaptability and innovation skills are being tested. But we can use this opportunity to examine our business practices, devise creative solutions and come back stronger.

Here are a few highlights of some other great content in this issue:

  • What’s the Job Your Customers Hire Your Products to Do? – The customer is the wrong unit of analysis when you’re trying to innovate.
  • Scentsy Ascends Again: Through 15 years of gains and a few dips, Scentsy stays the course with a record year of growth.
  • A Foot in Both Worlds – Major luxury brand L’OCCITANE’s move to select direct selling as the platform to launch their latest innovation could be a game-changer for the retail market. Is a hybrid mixture of direct selling and retail the future?
  • We Are People Who Need Talented People – Our industry needs to be constantly innovating and reflecting on how it attracts, manages and inspires its people.

During this time of uncertainty, we salute you for all that you doing to share a free enterprise opportunity with all opportunity seeking people throughout the free world. The products and services you make available has one common denominator – you change lives because of what you make available.

Stay calm and stay safe. We will all get through this together.

All the best,

Todd
