Sunshine State Turns Pink as Mary Kay’s Annual Leadership Conference Convenes

January 14, 2020 by DSNstaff Leave a Comment

Mary Kay Inc. is holding its annual Leadership Conference Jan. 12–16 at the Orange County Convention Center.

With iconic, traffic-stopping Mary Kay pink Cadillacs rolling into Florida along with an estimated 6,800 leading Mary Kay independent sales force members, the city of Orlando turns pink for the global cosmetics company’s annual Leadership Conference.

Each year, Mary Kay hosts its Leadership Conference in a different city. The four-day event focuses on recognizing, educating and motivating Mary Kay leaders from across the country. According to Visit Orlando, the official tourism association for Orlando, the 2020 conference will pump an estimated $17.5 million into the local economy in direct visitor spending.

“With acclaimed sunny weather and some of the best attractions in the country, we’re thrilled to hold our Leadership Conference in Orlando with thousands of Mary Kay Independent Sales Directors from throughout the United States and Canada,” said Nathan Moore, president of Mary Kay Inc.’s North America Region. “As we paint the town pink, our Mary Kay entrepreneurs will infuse millions into the local economy through hotel-room stays, restaurants and retail shopping.”

In the city known as the Theme Park Capital of the World, Mary Kay will take over Universal Studios Florida for an evening full of thrills and blockbuster entertainment on Jan. 12 to reward qualifying Mary Kay Independent Sales Directors. This marks the third time Mary Kay has held its annual Leadership Conference in Orlando following events in 1991 and 1997.

“As a premier destination for tourism, we’re excited to be back in Orlando for our third time to celebrate the success of Mary Kay’s top leaders,” said Laura Beitler, vice president of Sales for Mary Kay Inc. “Our Leadership Conference is an exciting opportunity for Mary Kay Independent Sales Directors and Mary Kay Independent National Sales Directors to receive leadership support and motivation to then share with the growing Mary Kay independent sales force worldwide.”

Mary Kay’s Leadership Conference is the first in a series of three annual conferences hosted by the iconic beauty company in the United States. In March, Mary Kay holds its annual Career Conference in approximately 30 cities nationwide and in July, the cosmetics giant hosts its annual Seminar in Dallas near the company’s global headquarters. Each conference targets a specific group of Mary Kay independent sales force members. Leadership Conference is specifically designed for Independent Sales Directors and Independent National Sales Directors, top Mary Kay leaders.

Fullscreen Study Finds Parennial Markers that Could Have ROI Implications for Brands

January 14, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Fullscreen, a leader in social-first entertainment experiences, recently announced findings from its new Industry Insights report: “The Next Gen Family.”

Focused on Millennial parents (36 million Americans in the 25- to 37-year-old age range with at least one child at home), the survey extracted deep insights for brands on this “Parennial” demographic, the first generation of parents to grow up with social media and emerging technology as part of their communication and content consumption patterns. As this cohort—making up more than half (55%) of all Millennials—enters the next phase of their life and overwhelmingly uses technology to help them parent (as 96% admit), they are approaching parenting, families and children in completely different ways than prior generations that have ROI implications for brands.

More than a Parent

One of the key findings from the report, part of a larger study covering multiple generations, is the articulation of the audience being “more than only a parent.” The results illuminate a pattern of Parennials embracing multiple aspects of their personalities, even though the amount of free time they have to foster those different aspects dwindles.

To date, it has been challenging for brands to gain a deep understanding of Parennials’ multiple identity markers and their new approaches and attitudes toward parenting and other aspects of their lives. Specifically, how they balance a well-rounded social media presence and “real” life with regard to technology, brands, advice, influencers and other impactful determinants.

The study shows that they’re using technology to balance their parental duties and personal time, with 47% using tech as a break for entertaining themselves and 74% agreeing that they co-view content with their children at least half of the time their offspring are watching content.

Technology Adoption, Shopping Behavior, Social Media Usage and more Parennial Insights

The “Next Gen Family” study also includes insights on early technology adoption leanings; shopping behavior; social media usage; online security and safety of kids; moms vs. dads distinctions; and how these insights are valuable to social, brand and influencer strategies. Some of these top-line data points include:

  • Parennials are 2.5x more likely to own emerging tech products compared to non-parents, with dads driving the purchase and introduction to the home and both parents embracing it
  • More than half of Parennials (56%) agree they are shopping every time they check their social media feeds
  • Parennials spend nearly 14 more hours on social media than they did two years ago

Implications for Brands

The study surfaced important implications for brands trying to reach this important demographic:

  • Think of Parennials as being part of family units, but also as well-rounded individuals
  • Cater platform strategies accordingly
  • Leverage social media stars/influencers thoughtfully, as parents are leaning on them as resources
  • Create content with intention

“People in the Parennial demographic are critically important to the success of many brands. Their purchasing power, influence among family and friends, and the multiple consumer personas they exhibit are all areas that brands can capitalize on,” said Maureen Polo, GM, Fullscreen Brand Group. “The key is having a deep understanding of what drives them, where they spend their time and what their greatest concerns are. We’re excited to have gathered this timely and proprietary data and look forward to engaging with brands to help them better understand Parennials and grow the brands’ businesses.”

Survey Methodology

The research, in partnership with Talk Shoppe, builds on findings from a 2019 Fullscreen study of more than 1,500 13- to 37-year-olds that looked at several generations and considered the changes over the last two years regarding the economy, technology and the societal atmosphere. Additional research was conducted using Fullscreen’s proprietary data tool TBH (To Be Honest) a proprietary panel of social-first Millennials that allows advertisers and marketers to conduct custom research and campaign testing to more effectively build their next campaign.

January 10, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

In conjunction with Nasdaq’s “Wellness Week,” LifeVantage was selected to participate in the Nasdaq Stock Market Closing Bell Ceremony at the close of Thursday’s market.

The ceremony took place at the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square New York.

LifeVantage President and Chief Executive Officer Darren Jensen, who rang the Closing Bell, was accompanied by the entire LifeVantage executive team, as well as the company’s respective global market heads.

“It’s an honor to help literally ‘ring’ in the new year and decade—particularly so on a healthy note —and we’re grateful to Nasdaq for shining the spotlight on health and wellness issues at the top of each year for the past decade,” said Jensen. “Far too many of us take our health for granted and wait for a health setback before being compelled to take action. One of the things we’re passionate about as a health and wellness company specializing in biohacking is helping people flip the switch on their health proactively so they can feel better and do more for longer.”

The company enters 2020 on the heels of posting its highest annual revenue in company history and earlier today announced preliminary revenue of $61 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2020, which represents the highest quarterly revenue in company history.

Brand Purpose to Drive Bigger Profits, Says New IBM Study

January 10, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

IBM released a new study on global consumer trends that reveals the importance of brand purpose surpasses cost and convenience for today’s shoppers.

The research, developed in partnership with the National Retail Federation (NRF), polled nearly 19,000 consumers from 28 countries, across all demographics and generations, from Gen Z to Baby Boomers (ages 18–73), to understand how individual purchasing decisions are evolving and help today’s consumer-facing companies navigate trade and commerce complexities.

One-third of all consumers today will stop buying their preferred products if they lose trust in the brand, and one-third of consumers have already stopped purchasing their longtime, favorite brands in 2019. As such, consumers are prioritizing those that are sustainable, transparent and aligned with their core values when making these decisions. They’re willing to pay more, and even change their buying habits, for brands that get it right.

At the same time, buying behaviors have changed drastically. Consumers shop whenever and wherever the mood strikes them – usually while doing something else. Whereas impulse buying was once the norm, impulse shopping is the current norm, 7 in 10 consumers now shop in “micro-moments”—or shop simultaneously while conducting their daily tasks.

With a proliferation of brands and products at shoppers’ disposal anywhere at any time, corporate values now outweigh product costs and convenience. Consumers of all ages and incomes pay much higher premiums for products aligned with their personal beliefs. On average:

  • 70 percent of purpose-driven shoppers pay an added premium of 35 percent more per upfront cost for sustainable purchases, such as recycled or eco-friendly goods.
  • 57 percent of them are even willing to change their purchasing habits to help reduce negative environmental impact.
  • 79 percent of all consumers today state it is important for brands to provide guaranteed authenticity, like certifications, when they’re purchasing goods. Within this group, 71 percent are willing to pay an added premium—37 percent more—for companies offering full transparency and traceability.

“Transparency constitutes proof that an organization and its offerings are what the company claims to be—a way to earn consumers trust. Brands can leverage data and integrate blockchain technologies as brand differentiators that effectively provide transparency and traceability, which will also boost profits as the study shows that shoppers willingly pay more if a retailer can demonstrate provenance,” said Luq Niazi, global managing director, IBM Consumer Industries.

The modern-day marketplace has created a new generation of customers that come with higher demands and bigger challenges that retailers must face in 2020, and the findings reveal major shifts in consumer buying behaviors that require a fundamental change in how retailers and consumer packaged goods brands build brand affinity.

With cost no longer the deciding force for consumers, IBM recommends the following for retailers to regain competitive market share in new ways:

Earn consumers’ confidence through transparency and traceability: With “micro-moments” on the rise, companies must go beyond simply offering convenient or quicker services to gain customers’ trust—consumer brands now need to differentiate themselves by offering convenient, quicker access to detailed information previously unnecessary, such as how the products are manufactured, quality of ingredients, if it is sustainable or ethically sourced, and under what conditions.

Measure sustainability through economic impact: Reducing environmental impact now goes beyond recyclable packaging or reducing carbon footprints. Purpose-driven brands must also help build a sustainable, circular economy for future generations. In order to preserve resources and eliminate waste in today’s commerce-driven landscape, sustainability must be integrated and measured end-to-end and across the entire supply chain for CPG manufacturers.

Deliver value through more flexibility, not more products: As digital interactions continue to influence the way consumers shop, retailers need to innovate in store, to give a consistent brand experience across all channels. The challenge however for many retailers is the ability to rapidly deploy and integrate new capabilities with their existing store technology environment to allow them to continuously deliver on consumer expectations.

“Shoppers today show an increased willingness to pay premiums for products that align with their values,” said Mark Mathews, vice president of Research Development & Industry Analysis at NRF. “The study’s findings show that today’s retailers need to be proactive in evaluating and understanding what drives current and future core buyers while still boosting margins for their business.”

The full study findings can be found here.
