Young Living Donates $20,000 to Arbor Day Foundation, TreeUtah

April 22, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Young Living today announced a $20,000 donation to TreeUtah and the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

Each nonprofit will receive a $10,000 donation to be allocated for the purchase and planting of trees.

Young Living is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to restore wildlife habitat by planting more than 5,000 trees in Fishlake National Forest on behalf of each Young Living team member. The Arbor Day Foundation has planted more than 350 million trees in neighborhoods, communities, cities and forests throughout the world to ensure a greener and healthier future for everyone. The organization’ vision is to help others understand and use trees as a solution to many global issues, including air quality, water quality, a changing climate, deforestation, poverty and hunger.

In addition to its donation to the Arbor Day Foundation, Young Living is investing in local tree planting efforts by donating $10,000 to TreeUtah. This sponsorship will enable TreeUtah to continue the legacy of adding trees to parks that provide beauty, cooling shade and cleaner air to community spaces. TreeUtah works with government agencies, local businesses, church groups and others to plant trees of all types and sizes around the state. Every year, the organization aims to plant 7,000 new trees to make Utah’s communities greener and healthier.

“We’re thrilled to make this donation to two important earth conservation nonprofits,” said Jared Turner, president and COO at Young Living. “Even though our Earth Day observance has had to pivot this year due to social distancing, we’re still committed to showing our gratitude to nature and to our employees by donating trees in their honor and making the earth a priority, no matter the circumstances.”

Isagenix Moves Closer to Zero-Waste Goal

April 22, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Isagenix International announced that it is making significant progress toward its zero-waste packaging goal, including transitioning more products to 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.

The Gilbert, Ariz.-based global health and wellness company recently reached three milestones in its journey to convert all packaging components to be made with recyclable, reusable, compostable, or recycled materials by 2028:

  • Effective this quarter, Isagenix is transitioning two product bottles to 100% PCR plastic, saving 1.2 million bottles of recyclable virgin plastic from being produced during the next 12 months. In total, more than half of the company’s products packaged in bottles and canisters are now made with 100% PCR plastic.
  • Isagenix is discontinuing plastic bottle neckbands for future production of nine products, equating to removing about 2.3 million neckbands per year, which equals 53 miles of plastic.
  • In November, Isagenix stopped placing plastic shrink-wrap around boxes. As a result, approximately 550,000 boxes will not be shrink-wrapped this year.

According to the company, going green involves not only its packaging choices but also its shipping and world headquarters operations as well as its product choices.

  • Shipping: Isagenix expects to use 75,000 fewer eco-friendly, insulated coolers for heat-sensitive products this year because it now ships to the Pacific Northwest from a recently opened Reno, Nevada, distribution center instead of an Arizona distribution center. The expected reduction of 75,000 coolers, when stacked on top of each other, is 14.2 miles high, more than two times the height of Mount Everest.
  • World headquarters: Photovoltaic solar panels installed on parking lot shade structures at the 166,000-square-foot building in 2018 are expected to provide approximately 463,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy annually. This amount is enough to allow clean energy to power nearly one-fourth of the building’s energy needs.
  • Products: Isagenix not only seeks out ingredient suppliers who demonstrate a focus on sustainability but also offers several plant-based products.

The company is absorbing the cost of all sustainability improvements.

“It’s exciting and gratifying to consider that what we’ve accomplished so far and what we’ll achieve moving forward will help current and future generations enjoy a healthier planet,” said Isagenix Chief Visionary Officer Erik Coover. “We’re committed to setting an example for how companies can take being sustainable from dream to reality.”

For more information about the company’s sustainability efforts, visit the Isagenix sustainability webpage.

USANA Net Sales Down 2.3% for Q1 2020

April 22, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

USANA Health Sciences, Inc. announced $266.6 million in net sales for first quarter ended March 28, 2020, down 2.3 percent versus the prior-year quarter.

“During this unprecedented period, we extend our gratitude to medical personnel, health officials, government leaders and volunteers around the world who are working tirelessly to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Kevin Guest, chief executive officer. “The health, wellness and safety of our employees, Associates and customers around the world remain our top priorities. Accordingly, we have modified our go-to-market strategies and operations in each of our markets to comply with guidelines from government and health officials. The most significant modifications we have made relate to positioning the majority of our employees to work from home and supporting our sales force to enhance their ability to run their businesses virtually through social media and conference calling platforms. Although these modifications, and COVID-19 in general, negatively impacted our business during the quarter, strong consumer demand for our high-quality, essential, health products and successful promotions helped us deliver operating results moderately ahead of our expectations.”

“Importantly, our manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and China remain fully operational to date, and we have experienced no meaningful disruptions to our world-wide supply chain. While we have always maintained high standards for safety and sanitation in manufacturing, we have raised those standards with additional measures—including body temperature monitoring, social distancing, and mandatory use of face masks—that are now recommended by government health agencies. Moreover, in certain markets we have temporarily closed product will-call centers and are instead offering curbside delivery and subsidized shipping to customers.”

Financial results and number of active customers for the first quarter of 2020 were as follows:

  • The Asia-Pacific region had net sales of $215.6 million, down 2.4 percent from prior-year quarter; active customers were 449,000, down 2.2 percent from prior-year quarter.
  • Greater China: net sales were $131.4 million, down 8.8 percent from prior-year quarter; active customers were 277,000, down 8.9 percent from prior-year quarter
  • North Asia: net sales were $27.3 million, up 22.6 percent from prior-year quarter; active customers were 57,000, up 29.5 percent from prior-year quarter
  • Southeast Asia-Pacific: net sales were $56.9 million, up 4.4 percent from prior-year quarter; active customers were 115,000, up 3.6 percent from prior-year quarter
  • The Americas and Europe region had net sales of $51.0 million, down 2.1 percent over the previous year quarter; active customers were 124,000, down 2.4 percent from prior-year quarter

The company joins the likes of Patagonia, Eileen Fisher and other Certified B Corps around the globe in trailblazing the global movement of people using business as a force for good.

The company decided to pursue a B Corp Certification to strengthen its commitment to its employees and founding principles. Through this affiliation, Harper+Scott looks to take on more social responsibility and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of their workforce, community and environment.

Youngevity Completes Joint Venture for Processing Facility, 2,200 Acres of Hemp Grow

April 21, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Youngevity International, Inc.announced that its wholly owned subsidiaries have entered into an agreement to acquire Chaguitillo Farms in Nicaragua.

The subsidiaries, CLR Roasters LLC and Khrysos Industries, Inc., entered into an agreement with H&H Coffee Group Export Corp and The Nica Hemp Cooperative, Inc to acquire the 2,200-acre farm located in Sebaco-Matagalpa.

Plans provide for all electricity and a 15,000-AMP electrical service to be delivered to the property and 45,000 square feet of buildings to be erected for extraction drying and storage, and for greenhouse space to be added to the property. The total estimated cost for the land and improvements is approximately $30 million, with H&H contributing the 2,200-acre farm with an estimated value of approximately $10 million, and all the capital toward the construction of the project to be provided by The Nica Hemp Cooperative, estimated at $20 million.

CLR Roasters and Khrysos Industries will initially contribute $3 million of extraction equipment to the project along with its expertise in the hemp business. Additionally, subject to Nasdaq approval, the companies intend to issue 1.5 million shares of YGYI common stock to the Nica Hemp Cooperative in exchange for a 50 percent stake in the land and the improvements (having a $30 million estimated value at completion) and will also issue 5 million warrants with a strike price $1.50 per share to the Nica Hemp Cooperative and CLR Roasters and Khrysos Industries will receive a 75 percent controlling stake in the hemp grow and oil extraction business. The warrants will be issued when the project is completed and commences its operations.

The project provides for complete preparation of the 2,200 acres; however, the initial pilot program planting will be for approximately 200 acres with an expected production of 400,000 pounds of hemp bio mass on the initial acreage, which is estimated to convert to 13,000 liters of winterized crude oil which, at current market prices has the potential to generate $6.4 million in gross revenue. The group anticipates growing 400 acres in year 2, 800 acres in year 3 and 2,200 acres in 2023. Fully planted the projection for hemp yield in pounds is approximately 4.4 million pounds per year, which is estimated to convert to 129,000 liters of winterized crude oil, which at current market prices has the potential to generate approximately $64 million in gross revenue. All estimates are assuming only 1 annual crop yield, however, the weather in Nicaragua may be conducive to multiple harvests annually.

“This is a very impressive partnership and collaboration between our hemp enterprise, our coffee enterprise and our very strong and growing strategic business relationship in Nicaragua. We feel that the value of YGYI’s 50 percent interest in the land and infrastructure at completion of the project along with the assumption that the warrants will be exercised represents a significant premium to our current trading price,” said Dave Briskie, president and CFO of Youngevity.

“We are proud to be part of such a significant project in Nicaragua in this burgeoning industry. We are pleased to be executing on the exclusive rights to grow hemp in Nicaragua that was granted to our group in November of last year. This project is only made possible through a strong collaboration of experts and a vision to be a leader in this space,” said Alain Piedra Hernandez, president of H&H Export Y CIA. LTDA.

America at Home: 30 Days In and Direct Selling Companies are STILL Growing Strong

April 17, 2020 by R. Todd Eliason Leave a Comment

Over the past month we conducted two informal surveys with 50+ leading direct selling companies for a snapshot overview of how the industry is faring in the current climate. You can see the encouraging results of the surveys here.

In my continued conversations with these executives, there are 10 top-performing companies on track to set all-time records in the month of April.

I’m extremely encouraged by the results these companies have shared. As a nation, we are 30 days into an unprecedented stay-at-home doctrine and adjusting to all the changes and challenges it has brought to our personal and professional lives.

The economy as a whole is reeling, but direct selling continues to show undeniable signs of growth.

Of course, every success story is unique, but what these top performers continue to show us is that there are several key strategies they all share that you can also quickly implement.

At SUCCESS Partners, our goal is to help not just our clients, but the industry as a whole—so I’d like to share the trends, strategies and approaches that are producing the best results as we all continue to build and grow our channel during these unique times.

WHAT’S WORKING: The Common Denominators

How are these companies excelling through the massive changes and shifting dynamics? They aren’t necessarily using a different selling system or model, but they are flexible enough to pivot to growing their customer and distributor base remotely.

These are unprecedented times. Over 22 million Americans have filed for unemployment in recent weeks—many of them natural salespeople displaced by the external forces decimating the retail and service sectors.

They want and need alternative income sources, and direct selling companies are uniquely positioned to offer them a way to supplement or replace their lost wages. They are online and ready for a new opportunity that allows them to put their skills to good use—from the safety of home.

Who better to rise to the occasion and provide that opportunity than the direct selling channel? We’ve been perfecting the process for over 100 years!

Impactful Products that Bring Value

When it comes to products, our channel’s reputation hasn’t always been stellar. Conventional wisdom holds that when it comes to products in direct selling: the cost is high, and the quality is low or not necessarily unique.

Another common misconception is that no one actually buys the products. We’ve all heard the phrase “garage qualified,” meaning distributors hoard boxes of products no one wants or needs to maintain their rank with no interest in building a customer base.

These are both antiquated notions—and they don’t reflect the current successful model of direct selling. As an industry, we have worked hard to change these perceptions by creating “hero” products.

The companies that are currently growing offer products that clearly reflect their brand’s mission and purpose—products that really work, feature proprietary ingredients, offer tangible benefits and fill a distinct niche in the marketplace.

Perhaps even more importantly, the most successful direct selling companies offer true value to the consumer. Hero products are more than discretionary one-time purchases to help a friend with their side hustle. They are must-have items that consumers purchase time and again because they work and are priced fairly.

Hero products build loyalty and strengthen brand association. Distributors—both new and seasoned—want to passionately advocate for the brands they represent. In turn, customers have a better experience, genuinely love the products and, in turn, the company. Delivering products and services that stand out is the shortest, clearest path to that goal.

This consumer-centric approach to high-value products reflects the strong trend toward emphasizing customer acquisition and retention over opportunity and building a downline. It’s important to note that companies focusing on high-quality products, customer acquisition and retention are outperforming those that are more opportunity focused.

Promotions are also on an upswing. Value propositions encourage purchases—just make sure whatever incentives you offer can be supported in this new, value-focused financial model.

Meaningful Marketing with a Purpose

The importance of clear, concise, value-based marketing is not a new concept. But what is relatively new is the emergence of caused-based marketing and social responsibility programs. Companies that lead with the values and causes that define them are finding higher levels of engagement and excitement—both with their distributors and their customers.

In a world filled with uncertainty and chaos, people want to connect with a company that reflects their values and is committed to doing good work. By identifying, supporting and sharing the causes that resonate with your company, you will inevitably attract the distributors and customers that share your passion and purpose.

Digital Deployment

It’s clear that the companies that already had cutting-edge social, digital and mobile tools in place prior to March 2020 are doing better than those that didn’t.

Growing companies are embracing the power and potential of the digital world. Social media platforms, videos, digital communications, productivity tools and remote software all continue to gain traction, and virtual meetings have taken on a whole new level of importance during social isolation.

But the single most important weapon in these companies’ digital arsenal is their mobile app.

The importance of a robust, multifunctional app that facilitates sharing, sampling, communications and an enhanced, seamless shopping experience cannot be undervalued. This is especially important as growing numbers of young adults join the industry.

Their lives are documented, curated and executed on their favorite social platforms and via text. They require an app that allows them to do business the same way they “do” life—directly from their smartphone. Now is the time for companies to upgrade or expand their app. It is—in its simplest terms—the future of direct selling. The right app with the right functionality and features is the key component to communicate, connect and convert with customers and distributors alike.

I invite you to watch a replay of our recent webinar, The Power of NOW. The webinar highlights the game-changing new features and advanced e-commerce tech capabilities of our state-of-the art app, NOW. SUCCESS Partners can help you expand your digital capabilities with surprising speed and scale.

Creating Community and Connection

Social distancing keeps all of us safe, but it does create a sense of isolation and loneliness—this is especially true for the extroverts that so often thrive in this channel. The companies that are leading the current growth trend excel at providing community and social interaction to millions of women (and a few good men) during a time when many are seeking more opportunities to contribute and connect.

As many people face unemployment or a chaotic, unfamiliar and demanding work-from-home environment, recognition is a powerful draw for a stressed, unappreciated, undervalued workforce. Recognition is something direct selling does better than virtually any other industry.

For so many, these are troubling times—compelling, uplifting stories that instill feelings of hope, belief and gratitude can help mitigate the overwhelming climate of fear, negativity and uncertainty.

We’re all being bombarded with an endless cycle of anxiety and fear. Through strong leadership, laser focus and a viable opportunity, the direct selling companies that are growing aren’t just peddling a side hustle—they are offering hope. And there’s nothing more powerful (and actionable) than that.

Virtual Events to Remember

Even before the current crisis, event attendance in the industry has been trending down. Virtual meetings, however, are reversing this trend. Companies that are “winning” the moment are embracing aggressive meeting rhythms via Zoom, Teams, Facebook Live and other digital meeting platforms.

The good news is that companies are reporting MUCH HIGHER attendance and engagement at these virtual meetings. Going forward, the success of online meetings will challenge and change the conventional approach to corporate events. Growth-oriented direct selling companies will continue to embrace this new normal even as restrictions on public gatherings ease and end.

More Content, More Communication

To help the field stay connected and engaged during social distancing, it’s important for corporate to facilitate increased communications—make sure your field knows you are there and are actively working to help them succeed.

Companies that are growing have been creating a steady stream of compelling content their field can easily access and share. Product stories and testimonials are powerful tools to strengthen your ties to existing distributors and customers and to attract new ones.

Make sure the content you create fills a void or simplifies a process for your field. Ensure that your messaging reflects your core values and mission. Keep it easy to deploy and share across multiple platforms and devices.

SUMMARY: Your Next Steps Toward Success

  • Leverage the industry’s new-found credibility as a legitimate home-based business option
  • Reflect your company’s values and mission
  • Embrace digital and social technologies
  • Convert customers to distributors
  • Lead with hero products, customer acquisition and retention
  • Create an environment of community and connection
  • Increase and expand virtual meeting rhythms
  • Deploy a steady stream of new, shareable content

Avon, Sister Brands Unite to Support Domestic Abuse Survivors During Pandemic

April 16, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Avon, Sister Brands Unite to Support Domestic Abuse Survivors During Pandemic. Cases of domestic abuse during the Covid-19 pandemic continue to rise.

As part of its #IsolatedNotAlone campaign, Avon Products Inc. is uniting with its sister brands Aesop, The Body Shop and Natura to galvanize its networks and call on governments to keep domestic violence front of mind and ensure support services have adequate funding.

An unintended consequence of the isolation measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus is that those women and children are trapped at home with their abusers, leaving them increasingly vulnerable to domestic abuse.

One in three women around the world experience abuse. In China in February, the number of calls to domestic abuse hotlines tripled compared with the same month last year, while in Malaysia they have doubled. In Argentina, since the lockdown on 20 March, emergency calls for domestic abuse have increased by 25 percent. In the UK, data from Refuge shows a 25 percent increase in hotline calls and 150 percent increase in visits to their website since the beginning of the outbreak.

The #IsolatedNotAlone campaign is raising awareness of the domestic abuse epidemic exacerbated by isolation during the global Covid-19 crisis. Together, Avon, Natura, The Body Shop and Aesop represent the world’s largest women’s network, connecting more than six million representatives and consultants, and 40,000 employees with 200 million consumers in 110 countries.

“As the Natura &Co group, we strive to be the best beauty company for the world. This is a landmark moment as the whole Natura &Co family comes together for the first time to create meaningful impact in this acute moment of need,” said Angela Cretu, CEO of Avon. “Together we will make a difference. I ask all our supporters, customers and friends to join hands with us and share this open letter, so governments take action to ensure support for women and children at risk. Join us—be part of the movement and support women in our communities.”

In tandem with the #Isolated Not Alone campaign, the Avon Foundation for Women has announced a $1 million commitment to front-line services to support women and children in need and at risk.

Young Living Launches Employee-Focused Initiative During COVID-19 Crisis

April 16, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

Young Living is launching an employee-focused initiative to not only hire new workers, but also keep all employees safe, healthy and happy during the global coronavirus crisis.

As it responds to increased demand, Young Living is continuing to recruit approximately 250 temporary employees to work at its distribution center, located in Spanish Fork. The temporary work, which involves preparing products and fulfilling customer orders for shipment, is expected to last two to eight weeks.

In addition to hiring new workers, Young Living is supporting current employees with a multi-pronged approach focused on:

  • Remote, flexible work
    • Includes implementation of an emergency leave bank, extended PTO policy, social distancing resources and essential equipment to all Utah-based Member Services call center staff.
  • Mental and physical health
    • Includes virtual gym classes, online resources with homework help for kids, free lunches for a week for American Fork Member Services staff and activating employees across the business to sew thousands of masks for use by workers in the company’s Spanish Fork warehouse.
  • Staying connected
    • Includes launching the YL Alert app, creating video content from executives and leaders to update employees on the status of the business and providing a comprehensive employee intranet with daily updates.

In addition, leadership personally donated money to provide lunch for warehouse employees. Donations exceeded the $10,000 goal and the excess was given to those employees to assist with food and childcare.

“Our employees play a crucial role in our business and the wider community and keeping them safe and healthy is our top priority,” said Jared Turner, president and COO at Young Living. “We are lucky to have such dedicated employees and to be able to offer additional positions to those in the community who may be out of work during this crisis. We will continue to ensure current and future employees are taken care of as we tackle this crisis together.”
