8 Social Media Hacks for Small Businesses

June 22, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

(This article was written by Alex Sixt and appeared on entrepreneur.com.)

Social. Media. These two words have made you either jump for joy or curl up in a fetal position in your pajamas at the overwhelming nature of these platforms. Either of these reactions are probably the reason you’re here: either you love everything about social media or the mere thought sends you into a panic-induced sweat.

Like it or not, it’s here to stay, and in these social distancing times, social media is more important than before to the success of your business. Taking on the responsibility of managing your social media accounts can be both an exciting venture and a terrifying process, especially if you’re working from home like many throughout the world. Have no fear, I’m here to tell you that you’ve got this and to give you a few pro-tips.

The good news is that you don’t have to be a celebrity or a household name—even if you’re not a Kardashian, you can build a great following and get more attention for your posts. There are plenty of little-known hacks that can upgrade your social media game and boost your business’ following especially during a time when it is vital to stay connected to your virtual community. Many platforms have acknowledged the hardships that small businesses are facing during the coronavirus COVID-19 crisis, and have developed features to aid these users to expand their reach across social media.

These features can be a fantastic addition to your toolkit, but there are plenty of other ways to reach new audiences that don’t have to involve an expert understanding of the algorithms or hours of your precious time. I’ve pulled together some of my favorite, essential hacks that can help you build your business’ social media presence from home.

1. Get on a schedule.

You may have heard the old adage that “content is king.” If that is true then scheduling software can be considered the court jester that makes living in the kingdom fun and also slightly easier. If you’re like me, you’d prefer to not be glued to your phone or posting content manually hour after hour, during lunch, and in the middle of the night.

The perfect solution: social media management tools. There are a variety of apps that give their users the ability to schedule content ahead of time and free up your schedule while saving you from the hours that manual posting can take. Depending on your specific needs, there’s likely an app or tool that will be the perfect fit for your management style, and most provide more tools—such as analytics—that will give you the opportunity to monitor your social media from one dashboard.

2. Don’t underestimate the power of a hashtag.

Hate ‘em or love ‘em, hashtags can be an excellent way to reach new audiences on social media. It’s easy to get carried away with them and tack on the maximum amount to every post, but don’t get lost by thinking too broadly. Using popular hashtags such as #love or #summer may put you into the mix of other related posts, but there is another type of hashtag to consider when targeting audiences who are already interested in your industry: niche hashtags.

For example, a wedding business in San Diego, Calif., should consider using #sandiegowedding in addition to widely used hashtags such as #wedding, to reach a more local audience.

But hashtags don’t have to be restricted to just your posts; add them to your profile’s bio, as well. Instagram recently added the ability to add clickable hashtags to your bio, making your page more searchable and leading followers towards branded content on social media.

3. Boost blog traffic by promoting them on social media.

Blogs and online articles are an excellent way to build your business’ online community and keep followers engaged. So, if you haven’t considered starting one, go do that now! Whether you’ve just started one thanks to my advice or already had one up and running, that’s great, but don’t stop at simply posting your content to your own site.

To increase traffic to your website, publish the post on your social media accounts. Try to schedule a few posts about your blog and include a clickable link to it, if possible (Facebook and Twitter have this feature, Instagram requires a bit of extra finesse to give links to users). This will help your users find your posts easily and boost your blog views – a win-win!

4. Partner with micro-influencers.

Influencer marketing is a hot trend. It’s a type of social media marketing that involves product placement and advertising from social media users with a large following in a specific industry (influencers).

While that may sound intimidating, don’t worry; you won’t need a Kylie Jenner-level influencer (with her $1.2M per post price tag) promoting your product to do this. Think smaller, a-la the micro-influencer. These are influencers who have anywhere from 2,000 to 50,000 followers on social media and focus on a specific topic or niche market.

Partnering with micro-influencers gives small businesses the opportunity to tap into influencer marketing without the costly and often arduous task of promoting your products through top influencers. Try searching hashtags related to your brand (remember Hack #2?) and look for popular social media users that share a passion for your industry.

Once you’ve identified a few potential candidates, reach out to gauge their interest in working with your brand—some will work for cash, some will barter, some might accept product in exchange for posts. Find even one person who is passionate about your product or brand and you’ll be on your way to reaping the benefits of influencer marketing in no time.

5. Understand the ideal times to post.

To post or not to post, that is the question we’ve all faced when deciding whether or not to hit “publish” on our genius social media creation at 12 a.m. Unless you’re a celebrity with millions of global followers, it’s best to wait to figure out the best posting times for your specific audience. Each platform has a general time they suggest when most users are scrolling through—but beware of adhering to these guidelines—they’re very broad and no audience has the same habits.

To determine the best posting times for your audience, begin with making informed guesses as to time slots that could garner traffic, such as the morning and afternoon commute or lunch break. Pay attention to which times earn the most traffic, and tailor your strategy from there. Build it into your plan as you set up the scheduling strategy you learned about in Hack #1. However, this is not a one-time fix; holidays and major events such as the COVID-19 crisis can change your followers’ daily schedules. Pay attention to these changes as they fluctuate and adjust your social media scheduling strategy accordingly.

6. Focus less on vanity metrics, more on engagement.

Vanity metrics, by definition, are considered the number of likes and followers you receive on social media. It’s extremely easy to buy into the idea that these are a true measure of your content’s success but, in reality, engagement should be the number one focus. Hundreds of likes on a social media post can show that your posts are performing well, but engagement such as comments and conversation will demonstrate that audiences are truly interested in your business’ services or goods and the information you share.

Many social media platforms offer free analytics tools that can provide insight into what types of content earn the most engagement on your page. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all offer a free analytics tool that can help you to figure out what your audiences are really responding to. Similar to when determining posting times, experiment with content and constantly adjust to posting what your followers engage with the most.

7. Harness the power of Instagram Stories.

It’s time to add the Instagram and Facebook Stories feature to your toolkit. Instead of a standard post, Stories allow users to post photos or videos that appear at the top of your feed and disappear within 24 hours. They’re a goldmine for interacting with followers, gathering feedback, and promoting your business on social media in a fresh, fun way. Best of all, it’s free.

Try posting to your Story a few times a week and add things that viewers can interact with such as questions, polls, or other stickers. But beware of over posting—users will rarely click through dozens of Story posts from a single brand or account. Instead, try to keep it around 10 Story posts to share your content while keeping viewers engaged.

Need some inspiration? A great social media account to watch that nails the Instagram Story game is Colourpop Cosmetics. They are a perfect example of posting beautiful Stories that earn them feedback on products and content that their audiences want to see.

8. Check out new small-business Instagram stickers.

In response to the hardship that the COVID-19 crisis has brought to many small businesses, Instagram has developed stickers to add to your Story. These stickers are designed specifically to bring your business more traffic.

When posting an Instagram Story, small-business users now have the option to add stickers that include buttons for purchasing gift cards, donating to a fundraiser, or ordering food. Each button allows users to link to a partner site, where they will be able to complete the action such as ordering food or donating money—helping to support your business with the click of a button. In a time where convenience and contactless purchasing is the new normal, these stickers can help to keep your social media community connected to your business (insert sigh of relief).

If you’re worried about how to manage your social media during these strange times, you’re not alone. While it can seem like an overwhelming task to stay connected to your community despite being socially distanced, adding some of these hacks to your social media strategy can help you stay engaged—even from six feet away.  Your followers are bound to respond and engage and, in turn, support your business. Happy posting!

3 Team Building Activities That Are Still Fun Virtually

June 19, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

(This article was written by Shelcy V. Joseph and appeared on forbes.com.)

Leaders around the world are struggling to connect with their employees, having to rely on communication tools like Zoom or Slack to stay in touch. Still, it’s possible to foster strong team relationships online and uphold a strong work culture that will keep morale and day-to-day productivity high. In fact, now more than ever, managers need to come up with fun creative ways to maintain authentic connections with their employees.

It’s true that technology doesn’t fully make up for real-life moments, but just because everyone’s working remotely, doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun with your team.

These ideas will get you started:

Host Virtual Happy Hours

Everyone pours themselves a drink then meets on Zoom. To break the ice, you can have each person say what they’re drinking and if applicable, how they made it. Take it a step further and ask your team about their drink of choice. You’ll be surprised to find out that you have more things in common!

Virtual happy hours are an engaging way to recreate the bar experience online and those signal the official end of the workday.

Schedule More Creative Brainstorms

These are my favorite team meetings as there’s generally no pressure to be right or even have a lot to say. The format is also pretty casual—someone shares a prompt and people volunteer ideas that may or may not be acted upon. No forced participation, just pure creative flow in an open space. While it may be different over Zoom, you can leverage features like the chat box to keep the conversation going.

These creative brainstorms can bring some much needed levity to your team and relieve stress.

Have Individual Check-in Meetings over Facetime

I call these the “how are you really” meetings, which can make everyone on your team feel cared for and supported—from having a space space to be honest and vulnerable. Just as an experiment, try changing up the medium of your one-on-one check-ins and use FaceTime for a more personal approach.

The 30 Minutes Challenge: How to Reduce Your Meeting Time

June 18, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

(This article was written by Luciana Paulise and appeared on forbes.com.)

The CFO’s most precious resource is time, and yet a typical day is occupied 72% by meetings according to a Harvard study. How can you reduce it drastically?

A Harvard research revealed that, during pre-COVID times, a company’s vice president would spend 44 hours a week going to meetings. His IT manager, 35 hours, of which he sent emails during 85% of those meetings. Most of the leaders surveyed had the same problem. CEO’s typically spent around 72% of the time in meetings, most of them last an hour or more.

In the new normal, the C-suite is holding even more meetings to keep the human connection.

The worst part is that, on top of the actual meeting time, you need to account for the pre-meeting activities, the post-meeting to-do’s, and the “switching time.”

The “switching time” is the time required to concentrate on a task after an interruption. It takes at least 15 minutes to become productive again after a break, and it takes at least 30 minutes to focus on a particular issue to move forward or make a decision, due to what is called “time fragmentation.” Going to a meeting, answering the phone, or an email are all distractions. For every 2 hours, only one hour is real work.

How a leader manages time demonstrates his leadership style, what he prioritizes and how he communicates. Assessing the quality of meetings, prioritizing who should attend and ensuring attendees’ full focus drives success.

Improving meeting productivity

In manufacturing, it is common to have short daily meetings of no more than 15 minutes, always at the same time. They are stand-up meetings, so no need to move to a room. They discuss three topics: what happened yesterday, problems and what will happen today. Short but concise meetings help to keep the focus on what needs to be done. If issues arise, deal with them in a separate meeting only with the personnel directly involved.

Prepare the meeting schedule in advance. If it is a periodic meeting, always follow the same agenda order. For example, project status, obstacles, do I need help? Everyone should get ready for it.

Prioritize who should attend

An HBR research shows that engagement typically decreases the more time people spend in very large group settings. People would be more productive and engaged if they could spend less time in meetings and more time preparing for them.

Minimize the number of people. Reduce it to the Jeff Bezos 2-pizza rule. No more than 6 to 8 people. The more people, the more unproductive the meeting becomes. It also avoids wasting the time of those who shouldn’t be there. Only people who can contribute should be invited, and they should be prompted to provide candid feedback. That’s the secret of Pixar’s Brain Trust meetings to foster quality and innovation. Some self-organizing companies such as FAVI (a French company with 500 employees) make the meetings public.  They can be attended by whoever is deemed necessary. If the session is informative, it can be replaced by a video-on-demand or an online tool can be used to collect data or questions such as Kahoo.it

Encourage employee confidence, self-discipline and psychological safety. Give them more opportunities to choose which meeting to attend and how to participate actively when they decide to be part of a session.

Review this week’s meetings and ask yourself: Is this meeting necessary? What is the objective? What is your role? Do you need to attend, or can you review the minutes? Especially working remotely, you may want to dedicate more time to one-on-one meetings than large ones. They are more meaningful as they increase employee engagement, sense of belonging and human connection.

Increase focus

When meetings are too large or too long, and agendas are not concise, attendees tend to switch to offline mode and turn the focus to emails or messages. That’s the worst kind of wasted time. You are not able to focus entirely on emails or the meeting. And the other invitees don’t get your input.

Make it short and sweet, to keep the focus on the issues at hand. Take advantage of online tools like Mural.co or ASANA to increase engagement during, or to communicate results, request feedback or assign responsibilities after the meeting.

Dedicate a specific time of day to having meetings, and have them all in a row, to reduce time fragmentation.

The 30 minutes challenge

Agendas and minutes are essential, but they are not effectively implemented nowadays. If you think about the last boring meeting you had, you probably realize topics were added at the last minute to the agenda. Some members spoke too much, while others were not even able to talk. It is most likely that a difficult topic took longer than expected because speakers were unprepared, or information was not handy. That meeting could have been held in 30 minutes top.

Why are 1-hr meetings a standard? No wonder why Zoom meetings are free under 40 minutes.  Push your team to do better and bring more innovation to the table.

As part of the C-suite, make it a company priority to set a new meeting standard of 30 minutes top, that will help your teams prioritize topics, select attendees more carefully and get better prepared for the next meeting. You will be getting back at least 50% of your precious time. Enjoy it!

Effective Ways to Manage and Relieve Your Stress

June 17, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

(This article was written by Amway and appeared on forbes.com.)

Whether it’s related to work, your personal life or finances, stress is a part of everyday life.

According to the 2019 Stress in America Survey, “More than three-quarters of adults report physical or emotional symptoms of stress, such as headache, feeling tired or changes in sleeping habits.” The overwhelming effects of stress can take a toll on your mind, body and overall well-being. While the situation you’re in may be out of your control, how you choose to manage your stress entirely up to you. Find out how incorporating a few healthy habits can help with relieving stress.

Prioritize Movement and Exercise for Stress Relief

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, your natural inclination may be to focus on the issue that is causing you to react. However, the best thing you can do is to get up and put your body into motion.

Your mind, body and heart are interconnected. According to an article published by Harvard Health, “Regular aerobic exercise will bring remarkable changes to your body, your metabolism, your heart, and your spirits.”

Exercise reduces stress hormones by releasing endorphins. Often considered the body’s natural pain killers, endorphins can help elevate your mood, produce feelings of optimism and help your body relax. Try to incorporate as much movement in your day as possible. If you can’t make it to the gym, go for a walk during your lunch break, practice yoga at home or dance in your kitchen. Every bit of movement can help in relieving your stress.

Create Boundaries and Learn When to Switch Off Work

Work is a major source of stress for most people. In fact, an annual survey from the American Psychological Association revealed that, “60 percent of people in the United States consider their job a major source of stress.”

Before you start considering a career change, try managing your stress by setting a few boundaries. Creating a healthy work-life balance is as much in your control as it is your employer. Set a rule for yourself that your work will remain in the office. Being able to switch off work mode is an important aspect of self-care. When you’re off the clock, do things that make you feel good, like cooking, spending time with friends or watching a movie. Those hours that you spend taking care of yourself will help give your brain a much-needed break from constantly having to think about work.

Stay Hydrated

A simple solution to stress reduction is proper hydration. Amanda Carlson, director of performance at Athlete’s Performance told WebMD, “Studies have shown that being just half a liter dehydrated can increase your cortisol levels.”

The National Academy of Medicine recommends that you drink one milliliter of water per each calorie of food consumed. To help reach your total daily intake, opt for a glass of water in lieu of your morning coffee or afternoon soda.

Get Quality Sleep

Stress is one of the largest culprits of poor sleep quality. Without adequate rest, you may begin to exhibit greater agitation and impatience—especially in the face of hardship. The Sleep Foundation recommends that adults get between 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If you have trouble fulfilling these daily recommendations, try implementing evening routines, like:

  • Going to bed at the same time every night
  • Turning off digital screens in the evening
  • Avoiding caffeine in the afternoon
  • Writing down your thoughts or to-do lists before bed

Reassess Your To-Do List and Set Goals

One of the most effective ways to combat stress is to address it at the source. Begin by identifying external triggers—like your career, relationship or finances—and determine ways in which you can alleviate some of the pressure. Maybe it’s asking for support on a work project or setting a monthly budget to manage your money. By creating a plan of action, you’ll be better equipped to tackle stress the next time it transpires.

Reach Out for Social Support

Confiding in a friend or family member about your hardships may not always feel easy, but it can provide you with a sense of encouragement and relief. In fact, creating an emotional support network is crucial in stress management.

According to Newcastle University epidemiologist Nicole Valtorta, PhD, “loneliness has been found to raise levels of stress, impede sleep and, in turn, harm the body.” Rather than keeping stress to yourself, talk through it with a relative, phone a friend or meet with a therapist.

Incorporating these stress-relief habits into your everyday life can help you stay calm and prevent chronic stress from developing over time. Remember, stressful situations are always going to arise, but you have the power to control how you react.

We have no doubt that with the experience and resources which ARIIX possesses, MaVie will realize and achieve the vision that it has aspired to since our company’s inception.”

Recognized as No. 35 on the 2020 DSN Global 100 list of the top revenue-generating direct selling companies in the world, ARIIX has recently achieved year-over-year global revenue growth of approximately 5 percent, from $220 million in 2018 to $230 million in 2019.

ARIIX is officially open in 23 markets, and MaVie has full business operations in nine markets.

PM-International Launches PM DirectCash

June 16, 2020 by DSN Staff Leave a Comment

PM-International recently announced the launch of its new PM DirectCash program, which offers direct online retail income.

After a successful trial phase on the U.S. market earlier this year, the company announced the global launch during its World Management Congress Live Broadcast event held on June 13.

According to the company, PM DirectCash was designed to support all PM-International Team Partners worldwide in their daily business. When signing up for PM DirectCash, Team Partners receive their retail income instantly for every online customer order.

For PM-International CEO and Founder Rolf Sorg, the new feature was the next logical step in the digital transformation of his company:

“Now more than ever, retail business is happening online,: said Sorg. “With that in mind, our goal was to create a fun, simple and instant solution for our Team Partners to get paid in real time, for every retail. Because that’s what direct sales is all about: an extra income opportunity with no risk, the freedom to work whenever and wherever you want and a lot of fun while you build your success.”

With PM DirectCash, PM-International Team Partners now have a fully online way to generate business and create retail income. They can consult their customers from home via video conference and have customers place orders in their personal web shop. These are handled entirely by PM-International within its Customer Direct Program. As soon as the order is paid, the retail income is credited instantly to the Team Partner’s My PMPay e-wallet, a branded payment and retail income infrastructure. From there, the Team Partner can select freely if they want their earnings to be transferred to a bank account, to their My PMPay debit card or to a PayPal account, immediately. This can also be managed on-the-fly with the My PMPay mobile app.

Next to usability, safety was paramount during the development process.

“We are fully focused on payment compliance controls and network security,” said PM-International’s Chief Technology Officer Hartwig Bauer. “Both PM DirectCash and My PMPay are equipped with a number of data protection features and financial network safeguards to help our Team Partners stay secure.”
