Beautycounter announced it is extending its mission of clean, safe product development to the fragrance market. Since the 1970s, the “fragrance loophole” has allowed companies to hide harmful ingredients under the generic label of “fragrance” or “parfum.” With its new fragrance line, Beautycounter plans to not only present five clean fragrance options with ingredient transparency, but also begin advocating for updated laws that would effectively remove harmful ingredients from beauty products and better protect consumers from known allergens, endocrine disruptors, carcinogens and skin irritants.
“Whenever asked for a piece of advice on how to navigate the personal care market, I have always recommended that people shop fragrance-free,” said Gregg Renfrew, Beautycounter Founder & CEO. “Many of the most offensive chemicals are found in fragrance. I think it is our right and our responsibility to give people safer solutions that they are confident wearing. I am proud that Beautycounter is launching a collection of beautiful scents, screened for safety, and am energized to continue to build on our history of disruption to create a higher industry standard, and most importantly protect the health and safety of more people.”
The company will also lobby Congress in May to close the fragrance loophole and support a larger Safer Beauty Bill package that aims to create supply chain transparency and ban the most harmful ingredients.
