Germany-based Vorwerk is honoring its roots and marking a significant milestone in its company history, celebrating 140 years of success and innovation. The company was founded in 1883 as a carpet factory but began producing goods from its machine workshop, like gramophone motors, in 1909.
With the invention of the radio marking gramophones obsolete, the company pivoted to household appliances in 1929, transforming its gramophone motor into a vacuum cleaner motor. This innovation created a learning curve for customers and the company found that its Kobold vacuum cleaners were best demonstrated through the direct sales model.
Through the transition to this direct-to-consumer structure, and the expansion of its product list and the opening of additional international markets, the company now operates in more than 60 countries and employs 9,000 employees, with 100,000 sales advisors in its community. In 2021, Vorwerk generated consolidated sales of $3.67 billion.
