Like many others around the world, Ireland’s economy has struggled to recover from the recession that began in 2008. While sluggish economic conditions have caused a dearth of employment opportunity across many industries, the Direct Selling Association of Ireland reports that the number of individuals signing up as distributors has increased 121 percent between 2008 and 2012. With this dynamic new seller base, industry sales have more than doubled in that same time period.
Much of the industry’s growth has occurred through party sales, accounting for nearly a fifth of total revenue. DSAI Director Lynda Mills notes that as many employment opportunities have dried up, so too has extra income to spend on socializing and entertainment. Home parties offer sales opportunities with the added benefit of hosting a social event for friends and family.
